In 1992, the extremely fast and hard hitting dance beats of gabber were favoured by the rave scene of the USA. For instance, in Chicago, Poing (with, on the flip side, Feyenoord Reactivate) by Rotterdam Termination Source (Midtown Records, 1992) was selling better than its home made product. By March 1992 it had sold over 70,000 copies world-wide. In New York it became part of the sound track for its suburban youth, with clubs the Limelight and the Tunnel in the forefront. For me it was a bizarre experience as a native from Rotterdam to have travelled to Chicago after having lived in England for years and ending up in the Limelight in New York to hear Feyenoord Reactivate for the first time, since it incorporates the melody of the team song for the Rotterdam football team Feyenoord to which I was able to sing along in Dutch.
